Biogas recovery by anaerobic digestion of Australian agro-industry waste: A review

On-farm, intensive feeding and processing in Australian red meat, dairy pork industries produce substantial quantities of organic waste (∼79 GL·annum−1 liquid plus ∼2 megatonnes·annum−1 solid waste) management is a major cost (∼180 million dollars. annum−1 for meat processing). Anaerobic digestion can instead extract value from as biogas energy biofertiliser to reduce operational costs environmental impacts, improve industry profitability. Understanding key information gaps fundamental step towards fully realizing profitable opportunities anaerobic digestion. This addressed here via critical evaluation available on agro-industries (specifically dairy, meat), their availability, potential, potential approaches. The analysis revealed varying extents information, but good (∼13.8 PJ·annum−1) meet significant demand (∼18 PJ·annum−1). Waste within respective influenced amounts characteristics, which affected options. co-digestion, involving aggregated two or more types across industries, provide further by boosting production harnessing spare capacity. Overall, cross-industry collaboration, policy support technology development could help harness the agro-industries.
